Can you not believe your eyes, if 10,000 fireflies, lit up the world as you fell asleep....
Her favorite time of day...
September ran at high speed into the hallway, her feet slipping and skidding on the wooden flooring of the two story house.
Nearly ramming herself into a corner, September made a sharp turn and bolted herself onto the couch excitedly, pillows flying off to the ground and the blanket covering the couch pushed off unintentionally by her back legs.
She panted, her hair floofed everywhere and messy, probably from the nap she was forced to take earlier. A window faced her covered with off-white blinds darkening the room, a string dangling in front of her. She grabbed hold of the string with her paws and pulled it the best she could, the sunlight drifting through as the plumerian child used her body strength to lift the blinds.
She then stopped and let go of the string.
September stared out the window of her small house. Her ears falling back as the sun barely starts to move downward. It would be just two more hours...just two..
She turned and watched Lattan bake some treats for the upcoming fall festival coming up. She was nice plume, not really related to her, they were just close friends. She called her 'Cousin Latt' and Lattan often treated her like her child. Lattan took her in at a young age and well, even now Latt is as close to a mother as she could possibly get. At most days at this upcoming point of the day, Lattan would be iffy about letting Sep out for the day. Sep called her too worrying, and Latt may as well be. Sep looked out the window to the sun slowly going down once more.
'1 hour, 40 minutes left'
she thought to herself lazily, her stomach making noises to the smell of baked goods from the kitchen.
It went on for long minutes as her eyes rolled over the landscape outside the thin glassed window. Fields and fields of tall grass for miles, just miles and miles of planes and terrain. That was what she loved about living here in Kansas, even though she was sometimes alone...
She loved the sun the breeze...but her favorite point still...STILL had yet to come.....
And what September hated most than a rainstorm was waiting.
Sep looked to the suns position then the the clock hanging high over the kitchen door.
'1 hour, 20 minutes...'
She adverted her gaze sighing a little, flopping down into the window seat she was kneeling on, her tail feathers awkwardly placed under her tail.
She glanced around the modestly decorated living room before jumping down and padding next door to the kitchen, shivers rolling down her spine as the cold wooden floorboards touch her paws. She made sure to step over pillows that had been discarded to the ground earlier, mentally noting herself to pick them up later, maybe before bedtime...
The moment she walked into the lemon colored kitchen, the smell of baked goods, specifically cookies enveloped her senses. The Spotted plume, her adoptive mother 'Lattan' was at the oven, carefully placing another tray of cookie dough into the hot caverns.
Lattan turned to glanced at Sep, her red eyes brightening seeing the younger plume and greeted her. September skipped up to 'Cousin Latt' and hugged her waist, being as small as she was her arms barely made it all the around, and then she allowed her hair to be petted and brushed by Lattan affectionately. After letting go, Sep stepped over to the high table and jumped up a little, eyeing the mounds of cookies and brownies made over the course of the entire day. September's mouth waters at the Macedonian nuts, sugar cookies... fudge nut brownies...oh wow chocolate chip. September turned her gaze to Lattan, who was now preoccupied with a cake recipe, feeling that she was done with making cookie dough. September eyed the kitchen clock, a cat clock ticking over the cabinets off to the corner.
'1 hour, 3 minutes...'
September glanced to the window above the oven to see the first signs of a sunset and she smiles faintly, 'almost there...'.
September then turned to Lattan once again. Glancing to the cookies, she very quietly stepped over and took one of the many chocolate chip cookies and shoved it in her mouth. Turning to leave, however, September felt a paw brush her tail, and she froze. "Sept-tember?" September turned to see her stuttering caretaker, a scolding smile on her face as she looked to her with knowing eyes. "Wh-what d-dit I say about s-sweets be-fore dinner?" September shuffled her paws and pouted a little, her eyes glancing to the clock again, '58 minutes..', " Sweets before a meal will spoil my appetite...but I was hungry" Lattan nodded knowingly and placed a pouch in the younger plumes paws, opening it, Septembers eyes lit up in excitement, " Sw-wweeets Latt but you said-" Lattan shushed her, patting her on the head smiling. "I-I guess its ok in moderation". September giggled happily feeling elated and hugged Cousin Latt tightly, glancing again at the clock.
'40 minutes...'
Sep backed away from Lattan and sat cross legged in the floor nibbling on the fresh baked cookie, she stared up at the window in the front of lattan longingly, watching the sun lower itself once more into towards the ground. She then sighed a little glancing again at the clock...
'30 minutes..'
She then smiled....It was time.
September dashed away and sprinted to the living room, dumbfounding Lattan. Looking at the clock, Lattan then smiled in understanding and laughed "S-September don't be out too late to-tonight honey!" September, who was rushing in the living room, stopping only once to see the sun inch closer to the horizon before bolting down the hallway, she skidded from earlier and bolting herself out the door.
'20 minutes...'
September seemingly chased the setting sun as she bolted straight out into the grassy fields. Her whipped behind her back and she laughed a little, making her way deeper into the tall grass. After a long period of time running, September stopped for a moment to catch her breath and began to walk the rest of the way to her destination, by now the sun was almost below the horizon.
'10 minutes...'
The chirping of crickets and frogs began to follow as the light began to falter and the sky, that earlier was a bight light shade of blue, was now in different shades of purple and red, oranges and yellows.
As sun dispersed, and the colors stayed in the sky. September smiled,
'1 minute...'
Her favorite time of day, when the sun enveloped the earth, and the fairies came out to play...
'its finally time...'
She glanced over at a patch of grass to the side, waiting intently. For a little while there was nothing, just an ordinary patch of grass...until there was a light.
September giggled and walked over to the lone light, at closer inspection was found to be, a firefly. Cooing a little, September wagged her tail a little and smiled "Hi Mr Fairy, you look very nice today, its very nice to see you up and about"
Cupping the lightening bug in her hands, September giggled as the Firefly landed on her and tickled her, giving her shivers under her fur.
All at once seemingly more and more dazzling lights, Fireflies, began to appear around September in a playful way almost. September, delighted at seeing the fireflies jumped around, letting go of the original firefly that had been found first. Everywhere in the grass, everywhere the little lights flickered and flew. The field was lit up in a way, almost like a never ending party under the starlight. Eventually September found herself dancing as the moon came up over the horizon, twirling and waltzing under the spotlight of the stars. The Firefly's in their own way contributed to the little plume's happiness and seemed to dance with her, their flickering lights brightening up the field in which they waltzed on.
They waltzed on for a good hour until faintly, September could hear Lattan's voice calling for her in the distance. Now was her least favorite part of the day, going home. September fell on her back panting then straightened herself up, glancing around at the lights around her. As if her 'Fairy' Friends, as she called them, knew she was leaving. The lights began to slowly flicker out, the bugs disappearing into the darkness. September waved sadly at the disappearing lights and smiled "Don't worry guys! you know I'll be back tomorrow..I wouldn't miss seeing all of you for all the cake in the world" In reply, one of the lightning bugs flickered in response, as if knowing her words. But then all was dark. As September began running at high speeds, but a little slower due to her new found drowsiness, the fireflies seemed to leave the area as well. Not a light in the grass to be seen.
September, stomping to her front porch, to empty out her boots, looked back smiling tiredly. She would be back the next and the day after that.
Though in untruth to what September had told herself earlier, she really had no favorite, or unfavorite parts of her day.
September loves the moment the clock counts down to waiting for the sun to disperse over the horizon, spending time with her Cousin during the wait. She loves watching the sun begin to falter and her long run to the plains. Yet most of all of course, she loved dancing with the 'Fairies', under the colorful sky birthed from the sunset, under the soon-to-be moonlight spotlighting overhead. The fireflies, 'fairies', however. Will always be her favorite part. In a way, they seem to shine only for her, when she visits them these long nights. September cherishes them deeply, and this, is what she loves most. Going home is never a favorite but September knows that the next day, she will be greeted by the same wondrous lights in the tall grass, the illuminating moonlight and the waltz that will inevitably happen.
All in all, Septembers favorite part of the day, will always be evening. From the time the sun begins to fall, till the moon rises over the sky. Sep will always be seen dancing with the fireflies into the night. And shes proud to do so as well.
